Calm Your Baby With Music

There are a number of ways to relax your baby, but music is one of the best. If you've ever been in a situation where your baby just can't seem to be consoled and you haven't given music a try, you might want to consider that option to create a calm for your child.

It doesn't even have to be music that is soothing for babies. Babies generally respond well to any constant in their lives, which could be easily achieved by tuning your tv to static noise (on a lower volume, of course), or purchase a CD of nature sounds, like rain, or chirping birds. Using music for your baby can be done even when they are already peaceful, as it will usually reinforce the baby's calm feelings. Eventually your baby will show that they enjoy music and sounds.

Bringing music into your baby's life can start as early as before they're even born. Studies have proven that unborn babies can hear sounds from outside of the womb after a certain gestational period. The type of music introduced to babies at this stage are usually the kinds of music that you have playing in your house or when you're driving in your car, listening to your favorite songs and artists. I personally noticed that the type of music I listened to when I was pregnant also ended up being the type of music that my baby responded best to after they were born. I feel that she likely had some memory of hearing that music before birth, and the familiarity of it afterwards was soothing for her.

Another way to introduce music to your baby is through CDs that were created for the sole purpose of playing to babies. These usually include classical pieces, symphonies, and childrens songs and lullabies. Obviously you will want to select music that you will be able to tolerate, especially if you find that your baby wants to hear it often, but keep in mind that babies generally respond better quieter, more slow-beat songs.

In addition to calming your baby, music has other important impacts on a baby, especially when it comes to brain development. Music has been shown to boost coordination and memory in both children and adults, and best of all, it promotes a love of music that the baby will take with them throughout the rest of their lives.

So, the next time your baby is crying or fussy and you've tried everything else, why not give music a shot? It will benefit your baby in more ways than one, and will likely benefit you as well.
