Music Lyrics
Obviously, music lyrics are simply words put to music, but because of the large number of musical genres and the even larger number of songwriters, it can often be a more complicated matter to clearly define.
Ever since the first music was played, the player would sing along. Lyrics add a whole other dimension to instrumental music because the words being sung generally take on an entirely different, but complementary, tone and sound than the music itself.
Mothers have been singing lullabies to their babies for centuries. It may not be enough to simply put on some relaxing music, but when lyrics are added, it can have a heightened calming effect that may not have otherwise been achieved.
Songwriters and singers have for centuries used music as a soapbox. Because of how popular all types of music are, they know that if they have a message to send, a story to tell, or an axe to grind, they will be able to do so through music.
Lyrics make humans take notice. They inspire us to do things, to say things, to be things. They have a vital role in our development as babies, and it has been proven that music stimulates our brains and actually makes us more intelligent.
With the advent of the internet came the publishing of music lyrics from every genre known to man. Internet users from all over the planet can type a phrase from their favorite song into a search engine and get results for websites containing the lyrics for that song. Google yields 77,700,000 results when one searches for music lyrics. If this isn't an indicator of the importance of music, I don't know what is.
There has also been controversy surrounding music lyrics, probably for as long as there have been songs sung. In the relatively recent past, artists from several different genres have been criticized for the words in their songs - allegedly that they themselves have been responsible for the actions of listeners who have been said to have done and said things that they wouldn't have otherwise, if not for the music they had been exposed to.
Despite how one personally feels about the negative implications of music and the words that accompany it, nearly everyone is touched in some way or another by music in their lives. Everyone has their own personal preferences - favorite styles, favorite songs, favorite artists, and favorite lyrics.
